President Trump told reporters that he is pulling out of the 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty signed in 1987 by Reagan and Gorbachev.  The Cold War era treaty had one goal, to ban medium range missiles that were then threatening Europe.  Trump claims that the Russians are violating the treaty and it is an anachronism. And just for full disclosure, President Obama said the same thing but decided to stay in the Treaty.

The question is, why now? Will this create a new nuclear arms race?

There seems to be a couple of reasons for concern.  First, Trump likes weapons, a lot.  He has upped spending even for weapons that might have been useful during the Cold War but have dubious relevence today.  Further, these weapons are irrelevant to the Americans as they have multiple platforms like subs and aircraft which make the weapons.  Another claim, according to the President, is that it doesn't include the Chinese.  So, the answer is to blow something up completely and risk more for a new agreement with questionable results?  He did this very thing with NAFTA and many of the changes were nothing but cosmetic or ones all sides would be been fine with without setting the building on fire

I appear on I24 International News to discuss.
