About Jack

Jack is really a storyteller, international explorer, and humanitarian and everything else rolls out from there. As a writer, its what he does.  As a trial lawyer and trial skills teacher aroud the world, its his most important tool. As a former CIA officer, the only way to truly motivate people is to connect and to tell them a story that they can feel viscerally.  As a media analyst, what better way to make a point.  In the end, he tries to captivate his audience about the world and its people as much as he himself is captivated.

Archive: This Photo Haunts Me to This Day

Archive: On joint patrol with US & Iraqi soldiers in Baghdad in 2006. It was a brutal time with constant small & sometimes not so small arms fire as well as the never-ending threat of IED's. I turned down a small street & saw these two little boys, brothers I think, peaking through a fence.

They looked me in the face and saw ... what? I slowly pulled my SLR up to my face and grabbed the shot before the gunfire pulled me away, partially out of fear for myself but partially our of fear that my presence before these boys made their lives even more precarious than they already were.

I should add that as I looked through the lens into their eyes, I saw two other sets of eyes, mine and my brothers. We are about that many months apart and I couldn’t help but make the comparison and I couldn’t help but think about how and why the Gods put us where they did and then subsequently placed these boys in this firestorm. It confused me, angered me and saddened me all at the same time. It still does. I'll never know if they survived.

This photo has haunted me ever since.

[The Jack Rice Show] Archive: Justice Collapses in Haiti

Archive - Just Arriving in Kabul, Afghanistan, 2009

Just found the rough audio from my first radio show for Air America in Afghanistan in December of 2009.  I'm laughing because I'm exhausted and yet so keyed up.  Hope you enjoy it.  reall a blast from the past for me.

Arrival in Kabul

Archive: The Only Thing Standing Is The Crucified. Port Au Prince, Haiti, 2010.

I was walking in the streets of downtown Port au Prince.  The difference between this part of the city and other parts was pretty incredible.  The devastation almost looked like a movie set.  You could stand in the streets and for as far as you could see, almost every building was completely destroyed or lurching at a an impossible angle.  The clearing of the devastation will take years and years and may never be completed.

The stink of the dead, dying and the open sewers from the 1 million plus living in the streets was . . . overwhelming.  I shall never forget it.

Not far from the Presidential Palace, I saw this Catholic Church.  With Catholicism being one of the major religions in the Country, many looked to God after the disaster.  Of course, one look at this church gives you an idea how much the church was impacted by this.

I came upon this church from the other side and saw nothing but destruction.  It was only after a while that I saw . . . Jesus.  Yeah, I know.  It took me decades and only in this place and at this time that I finally see Jesus.

I was pretty speechless at the time.  Jesus crucified!

While California is facing a financial crisis not seen for many years, how serious is it? Some experts are suggesting that while the economy may be a "train wreck", the state may also present a golden opportunity for the future. Jack with host Top Story on Monday night and open up the phones for listeners. Are you optmiistic? Or are you packing your bags and getting out of Dodge? Or Escondido? Or El Cajon? Or El Centro?

Jack Appears on KOGO in San Diego.

Jack hosts Top Story on AM 600 KOGO tonight where he opens up the phones and discusses California's unemployment increase to 9.3%.
