About Jack

Jack is really a storyteller, international explorer, and humanitarian and everything else rolls out from there. As a writer, its what he does.  As a trial lawyer and trial skills teacher aroud the world, its his most important tool. As a former CIA officer, the only way to truly motivate people is to connect and to tell them a story that they can feel viscerally.  As a media analyst, what better way to make a point.  In the end, he tries to captivate his audience about the world and its people as much as he himself is captivated.

Manafort Judges Faces Threats and Tries to Protect Jurors

Paul Manafort's case is the first trial brought by the Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team involving the Russia collusion investigation.  While the trial itself has nothing to do with the collusion question, Mueller clearly has the right to bring such charges.  This issue has been addressed now by multiple courts.

That being said, this first trial is almost done. Both the government and the defense have put on their cases and made closing arguments. Further, the jury has had the case for two days and counting. Today, Judge Ellis made it clear that not only is there a lot of attention on this case, threats have apparently been made on the Judge's life and he has brought in Federal Marshals to protect him. Even more, he said that he was concerned about the potential safety of the jurors if their identities was known.  As a result, he decided not to release their names.

This is going to be an interesting week coming up and the jury continues to deliberate.  I appear on Press TV Iran to discuss.

[Voice of America Intl. Edition] June 3rd: Trump Thinks He Can Pardon Himself

I appear on Voice of America International Edition on June 3rd.  So exactly how much power does the President have? According to Rudy Guiliani, the President believes that he has the right to pardon himself of obstruction, even if he obstructed Robert Mueller's investigation into possible Trump wrong doing involving the Russians.  You heard me, he thinks he can pardon himself.  So, this idea of checks and balances and three legs of a stool is nothing but trite garbage according to the President. His ability to obstruct any wrongdoing, any wrongdoing, is apparently unlimited.

Yeah, ok, this should be interesting considering that there has never been a U.S. courtroom that has agreed with the President on this issue. Further, it strikes me as important to consider any President he actually makes this argument without busting out laughing.

This should be fun.

[Voice of America Intl. Edition] January 23rd: Mueller Turns to Trump for Answers

I appear on Voice of America International Edition with Lori Lundin on January 23rd. As the Mueller investigation continues to move forward, it appears that he his opening a new chapter and that new chapter is entitled Donald Trump. This is significant as the Mueller team has acquired enormous amounts of information so when they are asking the President questions, they already know the answers.

This is potentially an incredibly dangerous chapter for the President.  Its not ju8st about collusion with the Russians but also about obstruction and what that means.  The President has been all over the board and the potential could be incredibly ugly.

This promises to be a really interesting converation. Hope you can listen in.

[Voice of America Intl. Edition] January 3rd: Trump/Mueller and What to Expect in 2018

As the Mueller investigation into possible collusion between the Trump camp and the Russians continues, 2018, promises to be interesting. At this point, two have already pled and two others have been indicted. Is Mueller done? Not even close. My expectation is that there will certainly be more indictments and those indictments continue to get ever closer to President Trump.

So, whom? Well, the short list at this point may include Don Jr. and Jared Kushner among others. These are sigfnificant because these are family members. Of course, this raises the ugly spectre of what the Prewidewnt might do. The concern in some quarters is this may drive the President to fire Special Counsel Mueller, This petrifies Republicans in the House because it may force them to act and they are all trying desperately to keep their collective heads down.

We will see. . . .

[MSNBC] August 6th: Jack Talks Latest on Trump/Russia Connection

I appear on MSNBC on August 6th. This seems to be the gift that keeps on giving, or the nightmare that keeps on scaring, depending upon how one wants to see it.  Bob Mueller has just impaneled a Grand Jury on Washington DC to look at the Russia/Trump connection.  Its important because there was already a Grand Jury that had been impaneled to look at disgraced National Security Advisor Mike Flynn and to start something new seems to indicate that there is something more to look at.

The advantage of a Grand Jury is that you can subpoena records and interrogate under oath and ultimately, bring down indictments.  This is potentially critical to the ongoing investigation.  Further, Mueller continues to bring in more very experienced and very capable prosecutors which also seems to say that this things aint nowhere near  done.

This should be an interesting conversation.

[Voice of America Intl] August 3rd: Jack Talks Trump/Russia Grand Jury

I appear on Voice of America International Edition on August 3rd. Special Counsel Robert Mueller has impaneled a Grand Jury in Washington DC to take a closer look at any possible collusion between Mr. Trump and/or his associates and the Russians. It is a fascinating development because it shows that the investigation isn't fading away but is rather heating up.

In addition, Mueller continues to add to an already impressive list of attorneys that are investigating the case. That fact that he is continuing to add attorneys also supports the contention that the investigation is not winding down but speeding up.

To add to the drama, bi-partisan bills have been introduced in both the House and the Senate to help insulate and protect Mueller from manipulation by the President. Its extraordinary that a bipartisan group see this an an issue.

This is going to be an interesting conversation.

[I24 International News] June 23rd: Jack Talks Putin's Russian Op.

I appear on I24 International News on June 23rd. Back in 2016, it became clear to my former employer, the Central Intelligence Agency, that the Russian government with the understanding and active support of President Vladimir Putin tried to run political operations against the United States to impact U.S. elections.  This was the most aggressive operation by the Russians against the U.S. in decades, maybe longer.  This conclusion was based upon extensive and intensive intelligence.  The Obama Administration took this to senior members of Congress who were briefed on the issues and became aware of what the Russians were doing. Frankly, at some point, the upcoming Trump Administration was completely briefed on the issue.

While there are many frustrating parts, one part is how the Republicans have hid behind President Trump's narrative that the Russian op was fake news.  It wasn't.  There is no excuse for this and the GOP is doing a disservice to the United States to minimize what the Russians were trying to accomplish.

President Trump's subsequent efforts, or lack thereof, are certainly of concern.  Bob Mueller's investigation continues and hopefully we will find the answers to his complicity as well as those of his compatriots.

Hope you can watch.
