About Jack

Jack is really a storyteller, explorer, and humanitarian and everything else rolls out from there. As a writer, its what he does.  As a trial lawyer, its his most important tool.  As a former CIA officer, the only way to truly motivate people is to connect and to tell them a story that they can feel viscerally.  As a media analyst, what better way to make a point.  In the end, he tries to captivate his audience about the world as much as he himself is captivated.

Teaching Trial Advocacy at the Criminal Justice Institute.

I'm extremely humbled to speak at the Criminal Justice Institute before my colleagues this summer.  I will focus my attention on opening statements and the skills needed in order to successfully connect with your fact-funder, whether that be directly to the jury or to the court.  This will be fun.

[Criminal Justice Institute Appearance] August 23rd: Jack Talks About How to Win Jury Trials

I appear at the Criminal Justice Institute in St. Paul, MN on August 23rd.  This Institute is one of the largest in the upper midwest and brings together judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, cops and more. This year, I appear as one of the experts.

I am going to take a big picture view of how criminal defense attorneys win jury trials. I will look at voir dire, opening statements, cross examination, direct examination and finally, closing arguments.  As there is only so much time, it will be impossible to get into too much depth. However, I believe that there are certain truths and certain requirements necessary in order to win.

It should be a lot of fun.

[Criminal Justice Institute Appearance] August 23-25: Talk on Law and Terrorism

I appear at the Criminal Justice Institute in St. Paul, MN on August 24th.  I will take a closer look at the unintended consequences of the war on terror and the law.  We have seen what this has done in criminal law, immigration and international law.  I have reported from around the world on the implications of these approaches and what it has does done and continues to do to our system of justice.  This should be an interesting discussion.  I will talk about my experiences in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and more.

Hope you can attend.  Click here for a link.
