About Jack

Jack is really a storyteller, international explorer, and humanitarian and everything else rolls out from there. As a writer, its what he does. As a international human rights lawyer and trial skills teacher around the world, its his most important tool. As a former CIA officer, the only way to truly motivate people is to connect and to tell them a story that they can feel viscerally. As a media analyst, what better way to make a point.  In the end, he tries to captivate his audience about the world and its people as much as he himself is captivated.

Julian Assange Arrested!

British authorities entered the Ecuadorian Embassy and arrested Julian Assange. Assange has avoided arrest for more than seven years but all of that changed today.

The Brits are holding him on essentially jumping bail.  He was also charged previously with rape in Sweden but those charges were dismissed back in 2017. The biggest charges he faces are from the Americans for essentially hacking.

It is an interesting place. Today, President Trump acted like he knew nothing about Wikileaks and Assange but of course we can't forget that he "loves Wikileaks" to quote the President.  We should also add that, oddly, Wikileaks make actually have placed the decisive role in sinking Hillary Clinton's Presidential bid that resulted in Trump gaining the White House.

I will appear on I24 tonight to discuss why the Americans car so much and how they will try to thread the legal needle in distinguishing the journalism and 1st Amendment claims from the hacking charge. This should be fun.

U.S. Judge Orders the North Koreans to Pay $500 million to Wambier family.

A U.S. Federal Judge just ordered the North Korean regime to pay the Wambier family $500 million for the wrongful death of their son Otto.  He was held captive for more than 17 months and tortured before finally being released.  He died shortly thereafter.  Applying the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, the Judge held the regime responsible.  While it is unlikely they family may never see a dime, it certainly was a moral win that the family was seeking.

I appear on I24 International News to discuss the ramifications of the ruling and how U.S. citizens sometimes uses this law to hold countries responsible for their bad acts.

Is Trump Restarting a Nuclear Arms Race?

President Trump told reporters that he is pulling out of the 1987 Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty signed in 1987 by Reagan and Gorbachev.  The Cold War era treaty had one goal, to ban medium range missiles that were then threatening Europe.  Trump claims that the Russians are violating the treaty and it is an anachronism. And just for full disclosure, President Obama said the same thing but decided to stay in the Treaty.

The question is, why now? Will this create a new nuclear arms race?

There seems to be a couple of reasons for concern.  First, Trump likes weapons, a lot.  He has upped spending even for weapons that might have been useful during the Cold War but have dubious relevence today.  Further, these weapons are irrelevant to the Americans as they have multiple platforms like subs and aircraft which make the weapons.  Another claim, according to the President, is that it doesn't include the Chinese.  So, the answer is to blow something up completely and risk more for a new agreement with questionable results?  He did this very thing with NAFTA and many of the changes were nothing but cosmetic or ones all sides would be been fine with without setting the building on fire

I appear on I24 International News to discuss.

Russian Cyber-Attacks Increasing Worldwide

Great Britain.  The Netherlands.  The United States.  The World.  Worldwide, the Russians have become increasingly aggressive, focused and successful in their cyber efforts to infiltrate and manipulate their adversaries. In the past, we have seen this in , Ukraine, Georgia and other parts of the Eastern block.  Then things really changed.  Think, Germany, France, Britain, U.S. and more.

Let's face it, they are very very good at it. It really isn't particularly shocking considering the fact that it is cheap, relatively easy compared to war, needs a sophisticated and energized internal organization to pull it off, and . . . its effective.  The Russians have all of this and more.

Just the other day, Russian intelligence operatives from the GRU, Russian Military Intelligence, were picked up in the Netherlands after targeting a chemical weapons watchdog, the Organization to Prohibit Chemical Weapons.  Seven more were indicted in the U.S. and the Brits are losing their minds, rightfully so.

I will appear on I2 International News to discuss the ramaifations and how the U.S. and the West still haven't come up with an adequate response.

OPSEC is a Beast

Operational Security is something that the professionals have been struggling for years.  It is based upon changing technology and abilities to defend as well as the capabilities of adversaries to wreak the havoc that they espouse. Operational security is something that the U.S. Secret thinks about every day, especially when it comes to the President of the United States.

They Secret Service has just rolled out "The Beast." This is the New General Motors Cadillac Presidential Limousine, again, known effectionately as The Beast.  Its 20,000 lbs and is, to put it bluntly, not a car, not a GM, not a Cadillac.  It is a tank on wheels.  One can run a country from it, it is hermetically sealed, armed and can take a hit like, well, a tank.  It is nothing short of astounding.

I appear on I24 International News to take look at The Beast.  Should be fun, ridiculous and a lot lighter than my usual topics.

Trump Rejects Globalism as Russia Embraces It

President Trump spoke at the United Nations General Assembly and unequivocally rejected globalism and embraced nationalism and patriotism.  As he withdraws from the world to leave all to their own devices, the Russians are doing just the opposite.

President Putin intends to sell advanced missiles to the Syrians in support of the regime. Assad is alive and well and is continuing to take back all of Syria with the help of the Russians and the Iranians.  Further, The Russians are expanding their influence in the region and seeking to become the driving force and it's geo-political epicenter. They are certainly succeeding. The problem is that the countries in the region will be looking to the Russians rather than the Americans.  This will impact trade, development, terrorism, immigration and more.  As Russia's influence grows, the Americans influence shrinks.

I will appear on I24 International News to talk the latest in Syria and how President Trump's words at the UN highlight America's future.

Will a North/South Korean Summit Lead to Another With Trump?

South Korean President Moon and North Korean Chairman Kim met for another summit this week.  This is not their first and they've promised that it won't be their last.  They both made promises to deal with some political, cultural and economic issues.  While this is promising, the issue the world is looking at is the issue of the North Korean nuclear threat. This, sadly, hasn't seemed to change much.

Kim Jong Un has promised to destroy a nuclear testing facility and a rocket testing lab but won't do anything until President Trump first does a series of things.  Unfortunately, this is reminiscent of what happened to the team of U.S. negotiators during the Bush years.  Trump opened himself to this with his behavior early on and then agreeing to a summit without conditions in June in Singapore.

The problem that Kim faces is both internal threats and external ones.  Both are critical to his survivial and the Americans seem to have never come to terms with this. The result is that they have never been able to thread the proverbial needle.

I'll appear on I24 International News tonight to talk about what the Americans need to do, if anything to dive the conversation forward.
